RedSnake as Nominee for Best New Event at Philly Geek Awards
So, Geekadelphia is having an award ceremony for geek-related things in Philly. One of the categories is Best New Event. While the current nominees are very good and each deserving of an award, there are notable events missing from the list. One of them is BarCamp (maybe it does not qualify as “new”). Another is the RedSnake meeting. I sent a tweet out asking for RT’s to see if we could get RedSnake nominated (please do that). I also sent an email to Geekadelphia asking for RedSnake to be nominated. The text of the email is below (NOTE: I cc’d Jason and Mat on the email):
Hi Geekadelphia,
With respect to the Philadelphia Geek Awards, I’d like to nominate “The Philadelphia RedSnake Meeting” for Best New Annual Local Event. This is a joint event between PhillyPUG (the Python Users Group) and Philly.rb (the Ruby Users Group) where local programmers give alternating 10 minute lightning talks to a crowd of their peers. The event was conceived at Barcamp Philly 2010 and the first annual event was held at SunGard in February. At this free event over 75 local programmers showed up and 12 talks were given. Afterward approximately 40-50 of the 75 attendees took over Prohibition Taproom for an after party to socialize and network.
I am nominating this not because it was my idea — ideas are cheap — but rather due to how well the local philly python and ruby communities came together, embraced this event, lined up babysitters, left work early, and showed up to an event that had zero budget but went off as a huge success. The official nominees should be “the members of PhillyPUG and Philly.rb,” to accept the award on behalf of both groups (if given the award) would be Tom Panzarella and Jason Stelzer from PhillyPUG and Mat Schafer from Philly.rb.
I highly urge you to add this nomination to the ballot. If you missed this event, some of the reactions from those who attended can be viewed here: http://www.meetup.com/phillypug/events/16189086/
Best Regards,
Tom.
